To do so, we’ve carefully selected from the full spectrum: everything from the roots of the medium, to films created with the advanced technologies now available to studios and independent filmmakers. Have a look at the impressive roster — there’s a little something for everyone!

Animation for a Cause

Why not enjoy yourself while helping a good cause? All proceeds from this year’s film festival (except PayPal fees & GST) will be donated to charity!

Proceeds from the screenings on Thursday through Saturday will benefit Covenant House Vancouver.

Since 1997, Covenant House Vancouver has been helping youth, aged 16– 24, get off Vancouver’s streets. They do this through a carefully designed Continuum of Care, which includes a daily drop-in, a 54-bed residential crisis program, a transitional living program, relapse prevention and life-skills training.

SPARK CG is proud to support Covenant House Vancouver in their effort to help the more than 1,400 homeless and at-risk youth who will reach out to them for help this year. For more information visit www.covenanthousebc.org

Proceeds from Sunday evening’s screenings will be donated to the Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocystosis (HLH) Care Fund, in memory of VIFF and Vancity Theatre’s Sumit Guha.

A strong proponent of film and the benefits of community building within the field, Mr. Guha was an invaluable supporter of SPARK since its very inception.

For more information on Mr. Guha, the fund, and to donate to this very worthy cause, visit the dedicated donation webpage.

It’s almost 11 pm and WHAM! It hits you: An insidious, appalling and almost irresistible craving for a late night snack. Late-night snacks tend to be hidden snacks, stolen morsels — the kind of stealth feasts that leave one steeped in shameful self-loathing and neurotic denial. “I'm just having a little bedtime snack,” we say to ourselves. Be warned; this edgy collection of animated shorts is for those late-nighters looking to satisfy a hungry craving.

In a future ruled by an unwavering dedication to good health and societal harmony, three high school girls, led by the defiant Miach Mihie, attempt suicide as the ultimate act of rebellion. One of the girls, Tuan Kirie, survives but can’t shake the hatred she has for the perfect world she lives in.

Thirteen years later, in an effort to escape the oppressive Utopia, she takes a job that sends her to the front lines of an active warzone. But when a terrorist group with a familiar message attacks Japan, Tuan suspects her supposedly dead friend Miach must be involved somehow. Desperate for answers, Tuan returns home hoping to find Miach and help her save the world from the suffocating monotony of peace.

Commercials are no longer relegated to the world of 30-second TV spots and this year’s collection of commercials · PSAs and cinematics certainly proves that point. From the storytelling in the Hitman Episode 2: Sapienza spot which looks and feels more like a scene from a movie than an ad for a video game · Nieto&rsqup;s ridiculously catchy IKEA commercial (good luck getting that jingle out of your head!) to the heart-warming story of a lottery win in Justino · this program will make you re-evaluate the commercial.
